Exhausted!!

November 5th, 2014 at 09:03 pm

I'm exhausted after officially starting my Christmas shopping today (using my vouchers) It felt like we spent all day shopping but it was really only three long hours. I need to get hubby's gift still, something else for my mum, J's stocking and my two cousins but apart from that I'm basically done. I also need to get a birthday present for my cousin. I'm going to check the box of stuff I won from the charity though and see if I can use anything.

I spent roughly 170.00 and I was 2.00 OOP so not bad.

I've invited my mum over for Boxing Day. The three of us discussed it - me, hubby and my mum - and they would both like me to make turkey (even though we're having it on Christmas Day) and have crackers too. I only agreed on the basis that I will make two different recipes and have different starters and deserts. I'm also going to use a turkey crown for both days and cook it in the slow cooker.

Please...Forgive my curiosity, what is a turkey 'crown?' It's wonderful to learn how others celebrate the holiday season. Is a voucher a coupon? What are popular gifts in UK this year? What have you decided to buy for DH, Mom? Are holiday crackers still paper hats in a tube? What side dishes are traditional with holiday turkey ? I'm so surprised that your mom isn't joining you for Christmas dinner. In Canada we invite neighbours, friends, colleagues, even acquaintances for 'finger food,' Boxing Day, Open House from about 11 AM - 4 PM. Since we do turkey and trimmings for Christmas, I use ham for Boxing Day mostly because it's so wonderfully flexible, sliced, chunked, diced, rolled, stick, balled appetizers and a base for endless party casseroles.

Great job getting the Christmas shopping done so early. Three hours of shopping IS exhausting!

Snafu: a turkey crown definition http://www.britishturkey.co.uk/cooking/crowns-other-cuts.html
Vouchers are basically gift cards. I had the option of getting my savings put on a card but I like to have the vouchers and physically see how many I have left. DH will probably get new clothes because he's not told me what he needs and his wardrobe is in a dire state. I've got my mum pyjamas, she wants chocolates and wine aswell. Yes crackers are still paper hats in a tube plus a joke and a little toy.
I would have liked to have my mum over for Christmas dinner but hubby wants it to bethe four of us since last year was a disaster (I got out of hospital on xmas eve and spent xmas day on the couch) I wanted to make hambut nobody wants it, I might make it the following week or before.
I'll be making sprouts, peas and sweetcorn (DH's request) to go alongside the turkey. Also pigs in blankets, stuffing.
I think I need to write my food list soon.

    CCF: thanks!

Thank you, I appreciate learning other traditions. Hoping DH & DMIL repaired their relationship with PS4 paid off and no longer an issue.
