Leftovers etc

June 3rd, 2015 at 04:57 pm

We're using up some leftovers for dinner tonight, possibly tomorrow too.I underestimated how much leftover we would have.

I came home from work and dh told me had ordered two games from the catalogue (because he didn't have the cash to buy them) and he picked BNPL. I said he should start paying it off before it gets added and I offered to help; he said if I wanted to help him I could help him with his credit card. I said that the catalogue needs help too, he thinks his credit card is worse. He asked what one I would want help with, I said the catalogue.

Still tracking spending - I will update soon.

Our funds are way depleted with outgo of camps and such for the kids, plus my brother's wedding next month. DH dropped his phone yesterday and the screen cracked. He wasn't too happy when I said he needed to live with it for the time-being. No credit card usage and I'm not moving the funds from savings.

Oh dear. Looks like he still doesn't realize what a scourge the catalogues are!

I need it to "click" very soon for him.

Oh no. I'm not happy to hear this, as I'm sure you were not either. Sounds like an impulse purchase. So instead of the games costing X, they will cost 1.5X if they aren't paid off. I hope you can get him on board to help you improve your financial lives. Even if you get yours taken care of on your own his spending could derail you in the future.

Can the catalogues be put on some sort of freeze or be cancelled so you can use them but can keep paying the debt? If so, I think you should both stand by while the other makes a phone call to take care of it.

Oh man, that's too bad. I hope he gets on the bandwagon soon. You're working so hard at this.

Sounds like he doesn't know the catalogue's interest rate!

Does he really understand how BNPL works? Maybe showing him some actual numbers, rather than discussing abstract things like interest rates, might help him get it?

Does he know the rate of interest will be tacked on from the beginning of the purchase and at a rate of almost 40%?

Can you put an update on a wall or something so he sees it often? By the computer maybe? That is what I did when I had cc debt. I put a list of the debts and the rates on a sticky on my computer so if I was tempted to shop online I saw it.

I am using that same idea for the goals of what I want to do to the house and where I am with saving money for them and the different pots of saving I have right now.

Wow, that sure stinks SG. I hope your DH gets on board soon.
